What is Tegretol / Tegretol CR (Carbamazepine) used for?

Tegretol (Carbamazepine) is an oral medication used to treat patients suffering from seizure disorders including certain types of epilepsy. It is an anticonvulsant that operates by decreasing certain nerve impulses in the brain that are responsible for causing seizures. This action may also make it useful for treating other conditions such as bipolar disorder, manic episodes, or nerve pain occurring in the face. Your doctor may prescribe its use for other unlisted purposes, as well.

How should I use Tegretol / Tegretol CR (Carbamazepine)?

Tegretol (Carbamazepine) is normally administered once each day at a dosage of one tablet. Your individual instructions will depend on your age, current health, the condition being treated, and the severity of your symptoms. These should be swallowed whole and unaltered along with a large glass of water and a meal to prevent nausea. Do not split or chew the tablets before use to avoid unintentionally destroying or altering the effects of their contents. Ask your pharmacist or doctor any questions you have regarding the medicine to make sure you are using it correctly.

What are the side effects of Tegretol / Tegretol CR (Carbamazepine)?

Side effects associated with the use of Tegretol (Carbamazepine) include:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Swollen tongue

Serious side effects that may require emergency medical attention are severe headaches, unusual weight gain, swelling, fever, flu symptoms, confusion, irregular heartbeats, sensitive skin, faintness, urinary retention, darkened urine, discoloured stools, or jaundice. These conditions may require lower doses or reduced application frequency to prevent further health complications from occurring.

Please Note

Tegretol (Carbamazepine) should not be used to treat patients who are allergic to tricyclic antidepressants, taking other MAOI medications, or who have porphyrias, bone marrow depression, or atrioventricular block. You are also suggested to inform your doctor if you have a history of blood problems caused by similar medications, a history of heart disease, history of psychotic illness, glaucoma, mixed seizures including absence seizures, a history of kidney disease, or a history of liver disease. These conditions may lead to unexpected health problems requiring special adjustments to our regimen.

Strictly use Tegretol (Carbamazepine) as prescribed and follow all instructions provided by your doctor. Safe, suitable, and optimum dosage can vary and is dependent on the patient`s health and medical history, as well as the condition you are treating.

Tegretol (Carbamazepine) may not be safe or suitable for all patients. Always ensure your doctor is informed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, using any other type of medication (including non-prescription medicine, vitamins, and supplements), as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or pre-existing medication conditions.

Seek immediate medical attention or proceed to your nearest accident and emergency department if you suffer a hypersensitive or allergic reaction. Symptoms usually present during a reaction of this nature include difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the limbs or face, tight chest, hives, and skin rashes.
