What is Priadel (Lithium Carbonate) used for?

Priadel (Lithium Carbonate) is an oral medication prescribed to prevent the occurrence of mania and hypomania associated with bipolar disorder. It operates by adjusting the flow of sodium through the nerve and muscle cells to prevent excitation. This can prevent symptoms such as feelings of euphoria, increased aggression, hyperactivity, or poor judgement. Your doctor may prescribe this medicine to be used along with others or for the treatment of other unlisted conditions, as well.

How should I use Priadel (Lithium Carbonate)?

Priadel (Lithium Carbonate) is normally taken two to four times each day at a dosage of one tablet. Your individual directions will be determined by your doctor based on your age, weight, health condition, and the severity of your symptoms. These doses should be swallowed with a full cup of water following a meal. You are suggested to increase your fluid intake to prevent the risk of unhealthy lithium levels in the blood. Avoid splitting or crushing the tablets before taking them as this may destroy or alter the effects of their contents.

What are the side effects of Priadel (Lithium Carbonate)?

Some patients using Priadel (Lithium Carbonate) have reported experiencing side effects including:

  • Headaches
  • Mild nausea or vomiting
  • Upset stomach or indigestion
  • Lack of coordination
  • Mild tremors or movement of the hands
  • Mild skin irritation
  • Thinning of the hair

Contact your doctor immediate if any serious or worrying side effects occur such as severe weakness, fever, flu symptoms, vertigo, cold sensations, discolouration of the fingers or toes, uncontrolled muscle movements, hallucinations, seizures or signs of lithium toxicity such as severe vomiting, loss of coordination, blurry vision, or tinnitus. These conditions may require lower doses, reduced application frequency, or emergency medical attention in serious cases to prevent further health complications from occurring.

Please Note

Priadel (Lithium Carbonate) should not be used by patients who are children, adolescents, breastfeeding, or who have heart disease, an underactive thyroid gland, Addison`s disease, or reduced kidney function. Also inform your doctor if you have psoriasis or myasthenia gravis as these conditions may cause unexpected health problems requiring special adjustments to your regimen.

Strictly use Priadel (Lithium Carbonate)as prescribed and follow all instructions provided by your doctor. Safe, suitable, and optimum dosage can vary and is dependent on the patient`s health and medical history, as well as the condition you are treating.

Priadel (Lithium Carbonate)may not be safe or suitable for all patients. Always ensure you doctor is informed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, using any other type of medication (including non-prescription medicine, vitamins, and supplements), as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or pre-existing medication conditions.

Seek immediate medical attention or proceed to your nearest accident and emergency department if you suffer a hypersensitive or allergic reaction. Symptoms usually present during a reaction of this nature include difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the limbs or face, tight chest, hives, and skin rashes.
