What is GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate) used for?

GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate) is used to treat patients suffering from angina attacks and heart failure. The medication rapidly increases blood flow to reduce angina pain and make it easier for the heart to operate. It should be noted that it is normally recommended to be used as a short term treatment in the event of angina attacks and should not meant for long-term use. Your doctor may also recommend it for the treatment of other unlisted conditions.

How should I use GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate)?

Always follow your doctor`s instructions while using GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate). The correct dosage and frequency of administration will be determined by your doctor based on your health condition and the severity of your symptoms. The normal dosage is one spray administered at the first sign of an angina attack. To use the medication uncap the bottle, insert the applicator into the nostril, and inhale deeply while squeezing to administer one dose. It should be noted that this medication is only meant for short-term use and should never be used for long-term treatment. Ask your doctor any questions you have about the medicine to make sure you are using it correctly.

What are the side effects of GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate)?

Side effects that may occur while using GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate) include:

  • Headache
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Redness of the skin

Stop using the medication and contact your doctor if you notice any unusual or worrying symptoms such as changes in your heart rate, a sudden drop in blood pressure when moving from a seated to standing position, faintness, or an allergic reaction such as severe skin rashes, swelling, or difficulty breathing. These conditions may require lower doses, reduced frequency of administration, or emergency medical attention in serious cases.

Please Note

GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate) should not be used to treat patients who are allergic to nitrates or who have severe anemia, low blood circulation volume, hypotension, a head injury, cardiac tamponade, aortic stenosis, cerebral haemorrhage, closed angle glaucoma, mitral valve stenosis, or hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. It is also advised to inform your doctor if you are malnourished or have low oxygen volume in the blood, hypothermia, if you have recently had a heart attack, or if you have severely decreased liver or kidney function to prevent unexpected health problems that may occur.

Strictly use GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate) as prescribed and follow all instructions provided by your doctor. Safe, suitable, and optimum dosage can vary and is dependent on the patient`s health and medical history, as well as the condition you are treating.

GTN Spray (Glyceryl Trinitrate) may not be safe or suitable for all patients. Always ensure your doctor is informed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, using any other type of medication (including non-prescription medicine, vitamins, and supplements), as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or pre-existing medication conditions.

Seek immediate medical attention or proceed to your nearest accident and emergency department if you suffer a hypersensitive or allergic reaction. Symptoms usually present during a reaction of this nature include difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the limbs or face, tight chest, hives, and skin rashes.
