What is Zonimid (Zonisamide) used for?

Zonimid (Zonisamide) is an oral anticonvulsant prescribed to prevent seizures caused by epilepsy. It operates by preventing repeated electrical impulses in the brain associated with seizures. Your doctor may also prescribe this medication to be used along with others or for the treatment of other unlisted conditions, as well.

How should I use Zonimid (Zonisamide)?

Zonimid (Zonisamide) should be used according to your doctor`s instructions to ensure the safest and most effective results from treatment. The normal dosage is one or two daily administrations of one capsule, but your particular directions will depend on your age, weight, current health, and the severity of your symptoms. These should be swallowed with a full cup of water and may be taken with or without food. A meal may be recommended prior to use if you get an upset stomach. Never open the capsules or dissolve their contents in water as this may destroy or change the effects of their contents. Ask your doctor any questions you have about the medicine to ensure the correct usage.

What are the side effects of Zonimid (Zonisamide)?

Some patients using Zonimid (Zonisamide) have reported experiencing side effects such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Loss of balance or coordination

Stop using the medication and contact your doctor as soon as any serious side effects occur including fever, flu symptoms, signs of dehydration, sensitive skin, easier bruising, severe back pain, speech problems, increased seizure frequency, blood appearing in the urine, or a severe skin rash. These conditions may require reduced dosages, reduced frequency of administration, or emergency medical attention in serious cases to prevent further health complications from occurring.

Please Note

Zonimid (Zonisamide) should not be used by patients who are under the age of six, underweight, allergic to zonisamide, who have had a bad reaction to similar treatments in the past, or who have a severe liver disorder. Also inform your doctor if you have high levels of calcium in the urine, a family history of kidney stones, decreased liver function, or reduced kidney function as these conditions may cause health complications requiring alterations to your treatment.

Strictly use Zonimid (Zonisamide) as prescribed and follow all instructions provided by your doctor. Safe, suitable, and optimum dosage can vary and is dependent on the patient`s health and medical history, as well as the condition you are treating.

Zonimid (Zonisamide) may not be safe or suitable for all patients. Always ensure your doctor is informed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, using any other type of medication (including non-prescription medicine, vitamins, and supplements), as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or pre-existing medication conditions.

Seek immediate medical attention or proceed to your nearest accident and emergency department if you suffer a hypersensitive or allergic reaction. Symptoms usually present during a reaction of this nature include difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the limbs or face, tight chest, hives, and skin rashes.
