What is Orligal (Orlistat) used for?

Orligal (Orlistat) is indicated for weight management. It can reduce body fat, or help maintain a healthy body weight by preveneting weight gain. Orlistat is not an appetitie suppresant. It works by eliminiating excess fat from your diet by preventing its absorption into your body. Use Orlistat along with healthy diet and exercise program for best results.

How should I use Orligal (Orlistat)?

Orligal comes packaged as a box of 84 x 120mg capsules. This equates to a 28-day supply.

Orligal should be taken must be taken with a meal containing dietary fat to work properly. It is most commonly taken with the three main meals fo the day.

Swallow each Orligal capsule whole with a glass of water with your meal.

Orligal will provide optimal results when it is combined with a healthy diet and an exercise program.

What are the side effects of Orligal (Orlistat)?

Orlistat can result in some unwanted side effects. Some of these can be severe and require you to stop taking Orligal. Some side effects are less serious and are just a result of the medicine working asa intended.

Tell your doctor immediately if you experience:

  • allergic reaction (hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat)
  • severe pain in your lower back
  • blood in your urine, painful or difficult urination
  • kidney problems such as little or no urinating; swelling in your feet or ankles; feeling tired or short of breath
  • liver problems such as nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)

Other side effects you may notice are:

  • oily or fatty stools
  • oily spotting in your undergarments
  • orange or brown colored oil in your stool
  • gas and oily discharge
  • loose stools, or an urgent need to go to the bathroom, inability to control bowel movements
  • an increased number of bowel movements
  • stomach pain, nausea, rectal pain

These are to be expected and mean that Orligal is working as it should. Contact your doctor if you are concerned about these.

Please Note

Orligal should not be taken if you:

  • are allergic to orlistat
  • suffer from chronic malabsorption syndrome (an inability to absorb food and nutrients properly)
  • are pregnant

Before taking Orligal, make sure your doctor knows if you:

  • have or have had liver disease
  • have or have had kidney disease
  • have a history of gallstones or kidney stones
  • have or have thyroid conditions
  • have a history of pancreatitis
  • have or have diabetes (type 1 or type 2)
  • have any eating disorder (anorexia or bulimia)

Orlistat can interact unfavourably with some other other medicines, particularly cyclosporine and levothyroxine. If you are taking either of these medicines, make sure to take them three or four hours before or after taking Orligal.
