What is Vagifem (Oestradiol) used for?

Vagifem (Estradiol) is a vaginal tablet containing a form of oestrogen prescribed to alleviate the symptoms of menopause. The medication operates by elevating lowered levels of oestrogen in the body to reduce hot flashes, fatigue, osteoporosis, and irritability. Your doctor may also prescribe it to treat other unlisted conditions.

How should I use Vagifem (Oestradiol)?

Strictly follow the instructions provided by your doctor while using Vagifem (Estradiol) to get the most effective results from treatment. It is normally applied once daily for two weeks followed by two doses each week after the initial treatment. Your particular directions will depend on the severity of your symptoms and your current health condition. To apply the tablets, unwrap one applicator, insert the applicator into the vagina, and press the button to release the tablet. Remove the applicator and dispose of it after use. Always ask your doctor or physician if you have any questions about using the medicine to ensure the correct administration.

What are the side effects of Vagifem (Oestradiol)?

The use of Vagifem (Estradiol) may cause side effects in some patients such as:

  • Migraines or dizziness
  • Mild nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Flu symptoms
  • Unusual swelling
  • Acne or changes in skin pigmentation
  • Depression
  • Disturbances in menstruation
  • Tenderness or discharge from the breast area
  • Vaginal irritation or discharge

Tell your doctor about any symptoms that become severe or if more serious side effects appear such as sensations of pressure, chest pain, swelling, severe coughing, a lump in the breast, unexplained vaginal bleeding, severe hypertension, numbness or tingling around the mouth, or jaundice. These conditions may need emergency medical attention or adjustments to your regimen to prevent more problems from occurring.

Please Note

Vagifem (Estradiol) should not be used by men or by women who have suspected blood cancer, angina, recent stroke, recent heart attack, endometrial cancer, or clotting disorders. Also inform your doctor if you have a history of uterine fibroids, history of benign breast cancer, severe obesity, varicose veins, mild clotting disorders, history of gallstones, history of diabetes, history of epilepsy, history of asthma, hearing loss, history of hypertension, or a history of miscarriage as these conditions may cause complications with treatment.

Strictly use Vagifem (Estradiol) as prescribed and follow all instructions provided by your doctor. Safe, suitable, and optimum dosage can vary and is dependent on the patient`s health and medical history, as well as the condition you are treating.

Vagifem (Estradiol) may not be safe or suitable for all patients. Always ensure your doctor is informed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, using any other type of medication (including non-prescription medicine, vitamins, and supplements), as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or pre-existing medication conditions.

Seek immediate medical attention or proceed to your nearest accident and emergency department if you suffer a hypersensitive or allergic reaction. Symptoms usually present during a reaction of this nature include difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the limbs or face, tight chest, hives, and skin rashes.
