What is Viraday (Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine/Efavirenz) used for?

Viraday tablets are a combination of three different HIV medicines - Tenofovir (Viread), Emtricitabine (Emtriva) and Efavirenz (Sustiva). Viraday should be used to treat retroviruses (RNA viruses). This includes Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Viraday works by slowing replication of the HIV virus by inhibiting reverse transcriptase.

How should I use Viraday (Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine/Efavirenz)?

You will usually take one tablet of Viraday each day. It should be taken on an empty stomach. It is recommended to take the tablets late at night, as this can lessen nervous system adverse effects.

What are the side effects of Viraday (Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine/Efavirenz)?

Some temporary side effects may occur when you start taking Viraday. Common side effects of Viraday include:

  • headaches
  • gastrointestinal conditions (nausea, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain)
  • loss of appetite or eating disorders
  • dizziness and/or fatigue
  • rashes, hot flushes or other skin conditions
  • mood changes, depression, anxiety
  • nightmares, trouble sleeping, insomnia

The most sever adverse reaction associated with Viraday is lactic acidosis. This is where lactic acid builds up in the blood, mostly because of liver damage, liver enlargement or fatty deposits in the liver. It it continues untreated, lactic acidosis can cause liver failure, kidney failure or pancreatits, and even fatality if left untreated.

Viraday shouldn`t be used if:

  • you are allergic to tenofovir, emtricitabine or efavirenz
  • you have adverse reactions to any other medicines
  • you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • you have kidney or liver disease
  • you have any infections, especially hepatitis B
  • you have any form of mental illness including depression
  • you have any bone disease including osteoporosis
  • you are taking any other medicines including prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, nutritional supplements or herbal treatments
