What is Tofranil (Imipramine Hydrochloride) used for?

Tofranil (Imipramine) is an oral tricyclic antidepressant used to treat depression. It operates by balancing the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain to prevent symptoms associated with this condition such as feelings of guilt, feelings of worthlessness, anxiety, or fatigue. This function may also make it useful for preventing bedwetting in children over the age of seven. Your doctor may prescribe its use for the treating of other unlisted conditions, as well.

How should I use Tofranil (Imipramine Hydrochloride)?

Follow your doctor`s instructions while using Tofranil (Imipramine) to get the safest and most effective results from treatment. The normal dosage is one tablet taken each day, but your individual instructions will depend on your weight, age, current health, the condition being treated, and the severity of your symptoms. These should be swallowed whole and unaltered along with a large glass of water. They may be taken on an empty stomach, but a snack or meal is recommended prior to use if you experience nausea. Never split or crush the tablets as this may destroy or alter the effects of their contents.

What are the side effects of Tofranil (Imipramine Hydrochloride)?

Tofranil (Imipramine) may cause some side effects in some patients including:

  • Dry mouth or coughing
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Upset stomach, constipation, or diarrhoea
  • Tingling sensations or numbness
  • Swelling of the breast area
  • Blurry vision
  • Tinnitus (Ringing in the ears)
  • Decreased sex drive, impotence, or trouble having an orgasm

Serious side effects that may require emergency medical attention are faintness, muscle pain, irregular heartbeats, chest pain, difficulty breathing, fever, flu symptoms, hallucinations, seizures, or jaundice. Inform your doctor as soon as any unusual or worrying symptoms appear to make sure the necessary alterations are made to your dosage or application frequency to prevent further health problems from occurring.

Please Note

Do not use Tofranil (Imipramine) if you have bipolar disorder, arrhythmias, a cardiac condition, a recent heart attack, or severe liver disease. Also inform your doctor of any other conditions you have that can cause complications with treatment such as if you are elderly or if you have schizophrenia, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, an underactive thyroid, hypotension, porphyrias, epilepsy, glaucoma, urinary retention, or reduced liver or kidney function. These can require special adjustments to your regimen to prevent unexpected health problems from occurring.

Strictly use Tofranil (Imipramine) as prescribed and follow all instructions provided by your doctor. Safe, suitable, and optimum dosage can vary and is dependent on the patient`s health and medical history, as well as the condition you are treating.

Tofranil (Imipramine) may not be safe or suitable for all patients. Always ensure your doctor is informed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, using any other type of medication (including non-prescription medicine, vitamins, and supplements), as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or pre-existing medication conditions.

Seek immediate medical attention or proceed to your nearest accident and emergency department if you suffer a hypersensitive or allergic reaction. Symptoms usually present during a reaction of this nature include difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the limbs or face, tight chest, hives, and skin rashes.
